Opening Up New AI Futures
A sustainable AI world is possible
AI is being shaped by access to the resources needed to build it. Yet compute, data and talent remain concentrated in a small number of countries and firms, limiting who can shape AI’s trajectory and whose interests it serves.
Opening Up New AI Futures examines how AI infrastructure can become more equitable and sustainable. The report looks at the concentration of compute, the environmental pressures created by expanding data centre infrastructure, and the interventions needed to open up access to compute while making AI infrastructure more sustainable.
It proposes interventions spanning international cooperation, more transparent and accessible compute markets, distributed and fit-for-purpose compute, sustainable AI infrastructure, and stronger policy and community engagement.
First released for consultation at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the report was further developed through engagement with researchers, practitioners and policymakers, and published on the sidelines of UN General Assembly Week 2026 in New York.
